Congratulations! You’ve been selected to play Dota 2

Yesterday I received an email in my inbox from Valve. It informed me that I have been allowed access to Dota 2 and I was happy to get it. Now, I am not a big MOBA player or anything. I never played the original Dota and have only the smallest level of experience with League of Legends. With this is mind, you may wonder why I was so excited to receive this invitation?

Dota 2

First, its the art style. I love the art that Valve uses on the Dota 2 website to promote the game and the events. Look at the page for “The Greeviling“. I love the dark-fairy tale style of artwork. As for in-game art, the game world, characters and spell effects look, in my opinion, superb and far better looking than I remember League of Legends looking the few times I played that.

Secondly, I like the fact that all the characters are available to play from the beginning, free of charge. League of Legends model works great for them and I know that there are millions of players that are happy with the game, but I like having the freedom to try any character I want, whenever I want to, without having to pay for that character.

Thirdly, Dota 2 is still in beta and already has a tremendous community around the title. I also trust Valve to support the title and the community with excellent content and events for far into the future.

I am not saying here that League of Legends is a bad game. Anyone who makes such a claim has no idea what they are talking about, it is obviously a very successful game with million of happy players. For a player like myself however, who is a newbie at both titles, it makes sense to me to devote my time into learning and playing the one that is most appealing to me.

I’m looking forward to the time that I will spend in Dota 2.
